Requirements for Board Qualification

Only candidates completing two years of CPME-approved postgraduate training in Primary Podiatric Medicine, Podiatric Orthopedics, Podiatric Medicine and Surgery-24 or Podiatric Medicine and Surgery-36 may sit for the Board Qualification (written) exam. The requirements to sit are as follows:

  • Beginning with the 2004 examination applicants must have completed (or be scheduled to complete by July of the examination year) two years of CPME approved residency training, which must include one of the above CPME-approved postgraduate training programs.
  • Submission of Residency Case Logs in Podiatric Orthopedics and/or Primary Podiatric Medicine, Podiatric Medicine and Surgery-24 or Podiatric Medicine and Surgery-36.

Candidates must submit their residency case logs and residency clinical activity logs. The logs must list all clinical cases the candidate participated in or performed during residency training and must be verified or signed by the residency director. The logs must provide sufficient documentation to the ABPOPPM that the candidate has participated in clinical activities in adequate diversity and volume. Insufficient documentation of adequate diversity and volume of clinical activity while in residency training can result in failure to achieve Board Qualified status.

All logs reflecting training subsequent to July 1, 2002 must be submitted through Podiatry Residency Resource. Any portion of the case log not maintained on Podiatry Residency Resource prior to July 1, 2002 must be submitted on hard copy. This hard copy must be in the same format as the JRRC 652 or 662 reporting requirements. Board Qualified letters will not be released until the complete validated case and activity logs are received and approved by the ABPOPPM.

Note: Candidates who meet these requirements, who pass the written exam and who provide evidence of an active license to practice podiatry will be granted board qualified status, which will remain active for five years, commencing the date board qualified status is obtained. If board certified status is not attained within the 5 year period, board qualified status will expire.

Duration of Board Qualified Status

Individuals who have completed a CPME-approved residency in Podiatric Orthopedics, Primary Podiatric Medicine, Podiatric Medicine and Surgery-24 or Podiatric Medicine and Surgery-36 will retain Board Qualified status for a period of 5 years before being required to sit for their certification examination.

The duration of Board Qualified status may be extended (to individuals already board qualified). Upon the request for an extension of Board Qualified status by an individual enrolled in a program of postgraduate study other than a CPME-approved residency training program, the Education/In-Training Sub-Committee will make the final decision. In such circumstances, Board Qualified status will be extended by one year for every documented year of approved training.

All alternate pathway candidates who currently have approved case documents on file or have achieved Board Qualified status are granted the ability to apply for certification until the latter of:

a. the expiration of their retake options, or
b. the expiration of their approved case documents
